The Camelback Corridor, between 7th Street and 18th Avenue, is presently one of the most heavily traveled streets in the city of Phoenix. With the introduction of the light rail along the Corridor, the City of Phoenix has designated the area for Transit Oriented Development. This development scenario set up a series of tensions among cars, pedestrians, residents concerned about the quality of life in their neighborhoods, and developers seeking higher densities.
This studio aims at reconciling these tensions through an investigation of the essence of urban life and space. Strategies that address public space, pedestrian comfort, access to transit, and transition to adjacent neighborhoods guided the studio in the development of the Corridor and its identity.
