The Phoenix Urban Research Laboratory (PURL) has organized Phoenix’s very first Urban Design Week. On April 9-13, 2012 PURL will engage the city with a series of public events. Through lectures, an art installation, a national premier movie screening and an urban design competition, PURL hopes to analyze the city’s collective urbanity and imagine possibilities for the future.
All events will be located at PURL, 234 N. Central Avenue, 8th Floor, Phoenix, Arizona 85004.
PURL is currently hosting a two-phase competition this winter titled RetroPHX as a precursor to Urban Design Week. First, Phoenicians are encouraged to submit ideas for improvements to the public realm. Using these suggestions, an open competition shall be held for architects, designers, and artists to address these ideas with a proposal for conceptual designs.
All events are listed on the website http//www.phxudw.com and include a packed week of nationally renowned lecturers, a design analysis from http://retrophx.com/ and a film screening. Urban Design Week will close on Friday, April 13th with a developer panel focusing on retrofitting sprawl and a design analysis dedicated to activating vacant buildings and spaces.
